The Word training I developed is a full-day or half-day
seminar, for one to six people, covering the use of a selection
of the skills from the following list:
- text formatting, including
- using non-breaking spaces and soft paragraph formatting
- when to use styles and when to use the commands on the Format menu
- interactions between the formatting information defined on the hard drive and that defined within the document
- styles, including
- applying and modifying styles
- the uses of the built-in styles
- creating, replacing, importing, and deleting styles
- table formatting
- simple image formatting
- automated referencing and tables of contents
- using the different views
- customising toolbars and hotkeys
- customising the options, including autocorrect options.
The length of the seminar is determined by the
pre-existing skill level of the trainees and the selections made from
the list. The content about styles and text formatting is integral to the course, regardless of other selections.
Traps and Pitfalls
As well as covering how to use features, the seminar focuses on common traps and pitfalls and how to avoid them.
- Have you ever sent a document to another person and
had them criticise you for using odd bullet points or font, when you
know it looked fine when you saw it on your computer?
- Have you ever changed the format of one paragraph, only to have half the document suddenly change format too?
- Do you ever wish you how to find the hotkey or
toolbar button for a command you use all the time, without having to
waste time digging through several levels of menu?
- Have you ever had a document that just keeps crashing, for no apparent reason?
- Do you waste time fixing layup every time you
alter a piece of text, because the document is full of soft returns or
tabs that have been used to make things look good?
